Clear Aligner Treatment for Straightening Teeth Discreetly

Straighten Your Teeth Without the Braces

If you’ve ever wanted a straighter smile but felt put off by the idea of metal braces, clear aligner treatment offers a modern, discreet alternative that fits comfortably into everyday life. At Doncaster Dental, we provide clear aligner treatment for adults and teenagers, delivering clinically proven results without wires, brackets, or any compromise to your appearance.

We serve patients from Doncaster, Doncaster East, Templestowe, Bulleen, Box Hill North, Balwyn North, and surrounds, all from our practice at 838 Doncaster Road.

What Is Clear Aligner Treatment?

Clear aligner treatment is a modern orthodontic approach that uses a series of custom-made, transparent plastic aligners to gradually move teeth into their ideal positions. Rather than metal brackets bonded to the teeth, each aligner fits snugly over the teeth and applies gentle, controlled pressure to shift them incrementally toward the target position.

Each set of aligners is worn for approximately one to two weeks before progressing to the next in the series. Because they’re fully removable, you can eat, drink, brush, and floss without any of the restrictions that come with traditional fixed braces.

Treatment is overseen by the Doncaster Dental team, with progress check-ups scheduled throughout to ensure your teeth are tracking as planned.

Is Clear Aligner Treatment the Same as Invisalign?

Broadly yes, Invisalign is a brand of clear aligner treatment, in the same way Panadol is a brand of paracetamol. Clear aligner treatment is the general category, and several brands exist within it, including Invisalign, ClearCorrect, and Spark Aligners. Invisalign is the most well-known and most widely searched brand in this space.

At Doncaster Dental, we will recommend the most appropriate aligner system for your specific case and goals.

What Conditions Can Clear Aligners Treat?

Clear aligner treatment is effective for a broad range of alignment and bite concerns, including:

  • Crowded teeth — insufficient space for teeth to sit in their correct positions, often linked to crooked or misaligned teeth
  • Spacing and gaps — gaps between teeth due to natural spacing or missing teeth
  • Overbite — upper front teeth excessively overlapping the lower front teeth
  • Underbite — lower teeth protruding in front of the upper teeth
  • Crossbite — some upper teeth sitting inside the lower teeth when biting
  • Open bite — front teeth not meeting when the back teeth are closed
  • Post-orthodontic relapse — mild to moderate crowding after previous braces treatment

Not every alignment concern is suited to clear aligners alone. A thorough assessment at Doncaster Dental will confirm whether they’re right for you, and what your treatment timeline is likely to look like.

What to Expect: Your Treatment Journey

1. Consultation & Assessment
Your dentist will assess your teeth, bite, and gum health to confirm suitability for clear aligner treatment. Digital X-rays and intra-oral scans are used, no messy impressions.

2. Custom Treatment Plan
Using digital scanning technology, a fully personalised treatment plan is designed around your teeth, your bite, and your smile goals. You’ll be able to see a preview of your projected result before committing.

3. Aligner Fabrication
Your custom series of aligners is manufactured and ready to collect, typically within a few weeks.

4. Wearing Your Aligners
Aligners are worn 20–22 hours per day, removed only for eating, drinking (anything other than water), and oral hygiene. You progress through each set every one to two weeks.

5. Progress Check-Ups
Regular check-ins with the Doncaster Dental team ensure your teeth are moving as planned and allow for any adjustments.

6. Retention
Once treatment is complete, retainers are provided to maintain your results. Consistent retainer wear is essential for keeping your new smile in place long-term.

Frequently Asked Questions

Treatment duration varies depending on the complexity of the alignment being corrected. Mild cases may be completed in as little as six months, while moderate cases typically take 12 to 18 months. More complex cases may take longer. Your dentist will provide an estimated treatment timeline during your consultation based on your specific situation.

Clear aligner treatment is generally more comfortable than traditional braces. Some patients experience mild pressure or discomfort for a day or two when switching to a new set of aligners, as the teeth begin to respond to the new position. This is a normal part of the process and typically settles quickly. There are no wires or brackets to cause soft tissue irritation.

Yes. Because clear aligners are fully removable, you can eat and drink whatever you like during treatment — simply remove your aligners beforehand. Aligners should not be worn while eating as chewing can damage them, and drinks other than water can stain or warp the plastic. After eating, rinse your mouth and clean your aligners before reinserting.

Contact Doncaster Dental as soon as possible. In many cases, you can move forward to the next aligner in your series while a replacement is arranged, or revert to the previous set. Replacement aligners can be ordered, though this may extend your treatment timeline slightly.

Some patients notice a slight lisp during the first few days of wearing their aligners as the tongue adjusts to the presence of the plastic. This typically resolves within a few days as the mouth adapts. Most patients find their speech returns to normal very quickly.

Clear aligner treatment may be partially covered under orthodontic extras with eligible private health insurance policies. Orthodontic cover is generally found in higher-tier extras policies and is subject to annual sub-limits, waiting periods of up to 12 months, and lifetime caps that vary between funds. It is worth checking your specific entitlements with your insurer before beginning treatment. Doncaster Dental can provide an itemised treatment plan to assist with any applicable health fund claims.

Clear aligner treatment is the general category — it refers to any orthodontic treatment that uses removable transparent plastic trays to move teeth. Several brands exist in this space, including Invisalign, ClearCorrect, Spark Aligners, and others.

Invisalign is the most well-known brand within that category — it was the first to market at scale, has the largest global patient base, and is the most searched brand name by consumers looking for this type of treatment.
